Out & about Andalucia

Just outside Velez Blanco is the site of the Caves of Letreros where there is an array of prehistoric cave paintings including the famous Indalo which has become the province's symbol of identity.

Traditional markets are in abundance throughout the area, the nearest being Chirivel each Friday. Velez Rubio has hosted a large market every Saturday since 1804. Local produce such as almonds, honey, goats cheese and cured hams are on sale.

From the cortijo you may see many species of bird life ranging from the colourful bee eaters to hoopoes and magnificent eagles which have nested within the pines surrounding the house. A recent guest observed over 26 different species of birds from just relaxing in the garden. He was treated to an aerial display of a Golden Eagle being attacked by a Booted Eagle. Further up in the mountains there are wild boar although rarely seen. Red squirrels have frequented the garden to chew on the pine cones. There has even been a sighting of the rare "ginetta", a wild cat like animal which like the boar only comes down from the mountains in search of food.

In February the mountainside takes on a whole new aspect as the almond trees blossom into an array of pink and white. March and April bring the wild flowers and a mass of red poppies which line the roadsides and nestle amongst the trees.

Texas Hollywood is a fully working film studio which has been the setting for many spaghetti westerns starting with A Fist Full of Dollars through to Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Set in the heart of the Tabernas desert this is only an hour and half's drive away. Not as commercial as most theme parks you will find a wild west town, a Mexican pueblo, Forte Bravo and adjoining zoo.

Walking starts at the cortijo gates in all directions taking in the natural beauty of this area with walks as leisurely or as arduous as you wish (maps can be provided) and of course there are numerous trails through the National Park. We are more than happy to provide you with water and packed lunches for your adventure. We also have a couple of mountain bikes for your use.

Horse riding is deeply rooted in the area and plays an important part in local festivals. Nearby there is a professional stable which offers rides to suit all abilities.

Golf enthusiasts will be aware of the Province of Almeria's large number of various courses amongst which is the famed unique Desert Springs - just a short drive away.

For those of you who enjoy astronomy, the night skies, devoid of light pollution, are amazing allowing you to wish upon a shooting star.

Fiestas - during the summer months these are in abundance with every hamlet, village and town having their own celebrations. These are full of colour, true Spanish culture and are great fun to attend. Why not arrange your visit at the time of one of the local fiestas so you can experience a part of the real Spain.

The lovely Mediterranean coastline is only a short journey away, where you will find coves and sandy beaches or there are the busier resorts of Mojacar and Aguilas and the fishing port of Garrucha.

The Cabo de Gata Natural Park covers an awesome volcanic headland just 30km east of the Province's capital city of Almeria. A line of barren volcanic hills slope down to the coast where deep gullies shelter coves with sandy white beaches and crystal clear water. The park boasts a plethora of bird life, marine activity and many species of flora

Heading west inland the world famous city of Granada with its grand Alhambra Palace is only one and a half hour's drive away. A further half hour's drive from Granada will take you into the heart of the Sierra Navadas with its stunning scenery offering exhilarating walks and its snow-capped peaks hosting skiing during the winter months.

Closer to home are the breathtaking lakes at Baza and many examples of cave houses in the surrounding area. You may also like to take a dip in the thermal waters at the baths at Zujar after which you could have lunch at the restaurant overlooking the lake.
